The challenge: a group growing faster than its brand

MJ Flood is one of Ireland’s most established names in print and technology, a business with real depth, genuine expertise, and a track record built over decades. But as the group expanded into new sectors, specialist services, and adjacent markets, its brand could not keep up. The identity still read as a narrower, print-led operation. There was no architecture to hold a diversifying group together. And critically, the brand was beginning to work against the business rather than for it.

When a brand constrains growth, when it prevents a business from being taken seriously in new markets, or makes cross-selling harder than it should be, it stops being a cosmetic issue and becomes a commercial one. That is the problem CDG was brought in to solve.

The question was not how to make MJ Flood look better. It was how to make the brand do more for the business.

The strategy: one masterbrand built to diversify

CDG repositioned MJ Flood as a unified engineering and technology group, a deliberate, market-facing move beyond print heritage that the group’s existing clients and prospective partners could recognise and trust. The masterbrand was rebuilt to hold the whole group together while giving each specialist division room to lead credibly in its own sector.

Crucially, we protected what MJ Flood had already earned. Heritage equity is hard to build and easy to waste. The strategy modernised the expression without abandoning the reputation, so the brand now reads as broader and more capable without feeling like a different company. That balance is what makes the rebrand commercially functional rather than merely aesthetic.

The existing MJ Flood identity carried strong recognition but reflected a narrower historical positioning. We refined the brand to represent a broader service and technology group while retaining its heritage equity.

Typography, colour, and visual language were modernised to convey dynamism, flexibility, and contemporary capability, creating a masterbrand able to confidently endorse multiple specialist businesses.

Architecture that lets every division scale

A structure built to absorb the next division, and the one after that.

A diversifying group needs rules of engagement. CDG built a flexible brand architecture with MJ Flood as the endorsed parent and clear, distinct expressions for Coffee and Security, so the group reads as one, while every division can lead with confidence in its own sector.

The architecture is intentionally designed for expansion. When the next division arrives, or when an existing one scales into a new market, the framework already exists to bring it in without disrupting the whole.

THE DIGITAL PLATFORM: Three websites. One system. Built for cross-sell.

CDG delivered three interconnected websites: MJ Flood corporate, MJ Flood Coffee, and MJ Flood Security. Each tuned to its own audience but built on one shared design system. The commercial purpose is explicit: consistent brand experience across every entry point, and connected pathways that move prospects between divisions rather than leaving them siloed in separate brand worlds.

THE OUTCOME: A platform for the next chapter of growth.

MJ Flood now has what a growing, diversifying group needs: a masterbrand with authority, a structured sub-brand system, and a unified digital ecosystem that presents the group clearly and credibly across technology, security, and workplace solutions.

The rebrand was completed recently, and the commercial programs it supports,  including the Mistara growth initiative,  are actively underway. What is already evident is that the group now has a brand capable of doing the commercial work a business of MJ Flood’s ambition requires: attracting the right clients, supporting cross-divisional growth, and presenting the group as the modern technology partner it has become.

Strengthening recognition across a diversified group

The refreshed MJ Flood brand and sub-brand architecture have created clearer market positioning across technology, security, and workplace solutions. A unified visual and digital system has improved recognition, strengthened cross-divisional credibility, and enabled more coherent communication with clients and partners.
