EPA

Brand guidelines for performance, growth and governance

A practical brand system designed to make EPA communications clearer, more accessible and more consistent.

The Environmental Protection Agency operates across a complex organisation, producing communications for a wide range of internal teams, stakeholders and public audiences.

CDG was appointed to strengthen how the existing EPA identity works in practice. Rather than undertaking a rebrand, we developed a clearer and more structured brand system that could be applied consistently across departments, communication formats and everyday organisational requirements.

The Brief: Turn an established identity into a system that works across the organisation.

The EPA already had a recognised and authoritative visual identity. The challenge was ensuring that the identity could be understood, applied and maintained consistently by hundreds of staff working across different departments and communication needs.

Existing guidelines and templates required greater clarity, stronger accessibility standards and more practical direction for everyday use. The EPA needed more than a visually polished document. It needed an operational design system that would improve consistency, reduce uncertainty and support more efficient communication.

The Strategy: Protect the identity while making it easier to use.

CDG began by reviewing the EPA’s existing identity guidelines, communication materials and internal templates. This allowed us to identify where the system was working, where inconsistencies were emerging and where users required clearer guidance.

Our approach retained the recognition and authority of the existing EPA identity while introducing greater structure across typography, colour, layout, imagery, graphic elements and content hierarchy.

Every decision was considered in the context of real organisational use, ensuring that the updated system could operate across both professionally designed communications and materials produced internally by EPA teams.

A clearer visual system for a complex public organisation.

We developed a more cohesive visual framework that established clearer relationships between the EPA logo, typography, colour palette, imagery and supporting graphic elements.

The system provides enough structure to protect consistency while retaining the flexibility required for different departments, audiences and types of environmental communication.

Clear examples and application guidance demonstrate how the identity should operate across different formats, helping users make confident design decisions without weakening the overall brand.

Accessibility built into the system.

Accessibility was treated as a fundamental part of the identity rather than a final compliance check.

Colour combinations, typography, hierarchy, readability and document structures were considered to support clearer and more inclusive communication. The guidance helps EPA teams understand not only how materials should look, but how information should be organised so that it is easier for people to read, navigate and understand.

This created a system that protects visual consistency while supporting the EPA’s responsibility to communicate effectively with diverse public audiences.

Templates designed for everyday use.

A brand system only succeeds when people can apply it correctly.

CDG developed practical communication templates supported by clear rules, examples and guidance. These templates provide EPA teams with a reliable starting point for producing consistent materials while reducing the need for unnecessary one-off design decisions.

The result is a more efficient process for internal teams and a more coherent experience for audiences encountering EPA communications across different channels.

Governance that protects the identity over time.

To support long-term consistency, the system also addresses how brand materials should be managed, approved and updated.

Clear ownership and governance principles help reduce the use of outdated or unofficial templates, while providing a structured approach for introducing new communication requirements as the organisation evolves.

This transforms the brand guidelines from a static reference document into a maintainable organisational resource.

The Outcome: One identity, communicated with greater clarity.

The updated EPA brand system provides a stronger foundation for consistent, accessible and effective environmental communication.

It enables teams across the organisation to produce materials with greater confidence, improves efficiency through reusable templates and protects the integrity of the EPA identity across every major touchpoint.

The result is not a different EPA brand. It is a clearer, more practical and more resilient system behind an already trusted public organisation.
